Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed a law that authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed a law which designated the month of March of 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Since 1988, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month.
At Indiana University, Women’s History Month is dedicated to celebrating women—both in history and today—who have made a difference through action. We invite you to learn more about a few of the women of IU who are the fabric of IU’s heritage from which we all can draw courage, pride, and a long-range vision.
