FAQ on Diversity Committees
What is the purpose of creating diversity committees at IU?
The purpose of establishing diversity committees is to comply with Senate Enrolled Act 202 (SEA 202), which the Indiana General Assembly passed in 2024.
Who serves on IU’s diversity committees?
The Bloomington Diversity Committee and Indianapolis Diversity Committee will each consist of seven members, including three faculty, two staff, one administrator and one student. The Regional Campus Diversity Committees will each consist of five members: two faculty, one staff, one administrator and one student.
Chancellors will collaborate with campus leadership to identify one member of each committee to serve as chair.
What are the duties of the IU diversity committees?
As required by SEA202, the committees are charged with the following:
- Review and recommend faculty employment policies concerning cultural and intellectual diversity issues.
- Review faculty and administration personnel complaints concerning cultural and intellectual diversity issues.
- Make recommendations to promote and maintain cultural and intellectual diversity among faculty members.
- Make recommendations to promote recruitment and retention of minority and underrepresented students.
- Issue an annual report stating the findings, conclusions and recommendations of the committee to the Board.
How often do the IU diversity committees meet?
All committees meet quarterly to perform their duties.
What is the reporting process for the IU diversity committees?
No later than June 1 each year, each committee will submit their findings, conclusions, and recommendations individually to the Board of Trustees.
