Faculty & Belonging

Faculty and Belonging: A Strategic Focus on Faculty Diversity

With a focus on elevating the voice and advancement of faculty members at IU, the Faculty and Belonging initiative strives to recruit and retain faculty, creates a new generation of scholars and administrators, develops and presents programs and workshops focused on faculty recruitment and retention efforts, cultivates partnerships with minority-serving institutions and organizations, and participates in various research and scholarly activities.

An Advocate for Lasting Change

A central figure fostering inclusive campus communities at Indiana University is Pamela Braboy Jackson, Ph.D., who serves as the first associate vice president for Faculty and Belonging and a member of the senior leadership team within the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (OVPDEI). She began her new duties with Faculty and Belonging in June 2022.

Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

When students feel a sense of belonging on campus and in the classroom, they are more likely to remain focused on their studies and committed to their educational goals. Diverse faculty members play an essential role in this success. The goals of Faculty and Belonging are to ensure diverse faculty find community, grow, and thrive at IU.

EMPOWER

The Enhanced Mentoring Program with Opportunities for Ways to Excel in Research (EMPOWER) is a mentoring program that aims to support the personal growth and professional success of minoritized faculty at IU Bloomington. The program is an extension of a current program of the same name at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).

Supporting Faculty Connections

These connections include on-campus and off-site events organized by the associate vice president for Faculty and Belonging (with input from the faculty). The experiences are designed to promote relationships and help create a sense of belonging and community among faculty. From lunches, walks around the track, to virtual sessions, opportunities to connect as a community take place throughout the year, across IU’s campuses.
