Indiana University’s Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs (OVPDEMA) presented David Hummons, former director of Community and Student Engagement, with the OVPDEMA Distinguished Inclusive Excellence Award.
“David’s impact on both Indiana University and the surrounding community during his 48- year tenure makes him more than deserving of this honor,” said James Wimbush, IU vice president for diversity, equity, and multicultural affairs; dean of The University Graduate School; and Johnson Chair for Diversity and Leadership. “David embodies the essence of this award, as he has made a lasting difference for students of all backgrounds, the campus as a whole, and members of the surrounding community throughout his remarkable career.”
In his various roles at IU, David has mentored countless students, helping them navigate multi-layered administrative processes and serving as a confidante and advocate committed to ensuring their academic and social success. David also supervised many student workers, who went on to achieve success and are now scattered around the country making valuable contributions to their workplaces and communities.
Throughout his career with IU, David also found time to give back to his community. Among many organizations, David has held memberships in the Bloomington Commission on the Status of Black Males, the Bloomington MLK Birthday Celebration Commission, the IU MLK Commission, and the Exchange Club of Northside Bloomington where he served as president three times and as the Indiana District Director of Exchange Clubs. He is also a member of Bloomington United and the Noah’s Ark 2 Interfaith Initiative.
For his commitment to students and his community, David has received numerous awards including the Living Legend Award given by the City of Bloomington for his many years of service to the community, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the IU Groups Scholars Program, the Building Bridges Community Award from IU, and a Certificate of Excellence for Leadership presented at a National Exchange Clubs Leadership Conference.
