Predicting and preventing violence on campus is best accomplished by creating a climate where civility on campus, in the classroom, in residence halls, at athletic events, and in fraternities and sororities and elsewhere is the norm. Even under the best circumstances, however, acts of violence can occur. Strategies to prevent a crisis include:
1. Communicate a clear policy against, and consequences for, violent behavior.
2. Identify potential offenders and victims early.
3. Report threatening behavior promptly; respond quickly to such reports.
4. Do not assume threatening behaviors will stop; take all threats seriously.
